The Gateway, Leeds

The Gateway, Leeds is a part of a new development close to the city centre which was designed by leading Leeds architects Carey Jones. It is a multi storey building for residential, commercial and retail usage. The exterior lighting includes a dynamic single vertical strip of light . This vertical band of light was achieved using a flexible LED ‘cold cathode look alike’ strip which is mounted in a vertical aluminium channel.

Flexible LED is the result of years of advanced LED technological research and development and today it is now utilised by the linear lighting industry on projects throughout the world. It is a perfect substitute for cold cathode lighting; it offers the same intense light output and uniform brightness. But has the additional advantages of being easy to cut and shape, quick to install, it is robust and lightweight. Traditional cold cathode tubes are fragile and the heavy weight of its supporting infrastructure is very expensive to package, ship and install.

In the ‘green conscience environment ‘ in which we now live flexible LED uses considerably less energy. It also offers a long service, life low maintenance and low installation costs making it an ideal cost effective product for this kind of installation that calls for high surface brightness light to accentuate an architectural feature of a building. It has certainly brightened the skyline in this part of Leeds!
